8 Different Ways to Stay Healthy & Fit as a Busy Mom

A gym membership isn’t always needed in order to keep a healthy lifestyle.  Many people exercise without using special gym equipment as well.  There are so many different exercises you can do from home and even outside!  Personally, I love my Beachbody on Demand because it allows me to stream work outs right from home and the variety is amazing.  You can also scour Youtube for fitness routines.  Some of my favorites are from Pop Sugar and Tone It Up!

Tip #1:  Schedule Workouts

Remember, even though you’re a mother you deserve this time for yourself.  Health is so important.  It’s so easy to put our health to the side because we are busy taking care of others.  In the end, you cannot pour from an empty cup and living an active lifestyle will help you have more energy to spare.

Life does get in the way.  Kids get sick, you get sick, something is always bound to happen.  If your work out gets interrupted, try jumping back into it 10 minutes later.  This isn’t simple for everyone (full time working mom, here!).  What I do is either wake up early before work or save it for the evening.  It’s also fun to get a brisk walk in during my lunch break.  Don’t give up!

#2  Include your Kids

Invite your children to join in!  Going for walks to the park or around the neighborhood is such a fun activity.  I have great memories of this growing up, especially when my mom let us ride our bikes instead of walking!

Right now I’m completing Beachbody’s 80 Day Obsession program at home and my 3 year old daughter loves copying the moves.  She will even be my little assistant and hand me resistance loops and sliders when needed!  I can tell it makes her feel important and on the days I’m less motivated she will remind me, “Mommy, work out time?!”  Use your kids to motivate you.

Another fun activity you can include your kids in is hiking!  This summer my little family has gone on a 1-3 mile hike almost every saturday morning.  Not sure where to start?  Check out my blog post How to Hike With a Toddler for important tips and ideas!

#3 Water

Drinking water throughout the day will keep you hydrated and energized.  Your body and skin will be thanking you!  To get myself excited about drinking lots of water I went to Starbucks and bought the cutest tumbler.  Pretty things make me happy.  It’s fun and exciting to add lemon, lime, mint or even berries to your daily water.  Try it next time!  It’s so fun to mix it up.

#4 Don’t Overwhelm Yourself

Take small steps in the right direction.  By easing into meal prep and exercise slowly, you are giving your body and mind a chance to adapt.  You will be an expert before you know it!  Start off by adding a fruit or veggie to each of your meals and then gradually add more over time.  This also works for exercise.  For example, if you can only walk a mile this week, shoot for 1.5 miles the following week.

#5 Sleep

By making sure you get enough sleep you are giving your body more energy for the next day.  Shoot for at least 7-8 hours of sleep per night.  Our muscles work hard to repair themselves while we are sleeping.  You will soon notice energy levels increase as well as your mood!

#6 Music

Does anyone else get pumped when their favorite song comes on?  I know I do!  I push harder during a work out when the music I love is playing.  With my at home work outs I stream music from Amazon Alexa or Spotify.  I also have the Spotify app on my phone for walks!

#7 Meal Prep

Meal prepping is essential to staying on track.  It can also be really time consuming and stressful if you’re over thinking it.  Start out prepping for one meal per day for the week.  Week one you can try prepping overnight oats for breakfasts monday through friday.  Once you’ve mastered one meal, shoot for two meals the following week.  Don’t overwhelm yourself with complicated meal plans.  Strive for easy, simple foods like lean meats, whole grains, and produce.

#8 Rewards

Setting goals is a great way to keep yourself motivated throughout the week.  Try not to bribe yourself with a giant case of ice cream for the end of the week.  Set goals and reward yourself with new work out shorts, a pair of fun socks, a bathing suit, or even a lazy movie night.
